Caterina Pienovi

Caterina Pienovi has been a research scientist at the Istituto per la Matematica Applicata since 1971.

Previously, she was involved in the management of the Computer System facilities of the University of Genova as a computer technician. In that role, she met the rising group of IMA - CNR, getting initially involved in the basic graphical aspects of the educational project under development at IMA at that time.

From this first experience, she derives her interest in Computer Graphics, which developped with the participation to the meetings and activities of the International Standard Organization (ISO/TC97/SC24), which led to the definition of the official graphic standards GKS, GKS3D and PHIGS.

Spreading of Computer Graphics in applications addressed her interest to architectural CAD, Geographical Information Systems, and Cultural Heritage management.

Her present research interests include Geometric Modelling and Computational Geometry, with application to the fields of Spatial Data Modelling and Analysis (geometric modelling), Terrain Modelling with high fidelity requirements, and Reverse Engineering. She is involved in several national and international research projects in related fields.

She has written more than 70 refereed technical papers, and is the author of two patented systems for surface triangulation and contour map extraction.
